Legal Clinic appears at Supreme Court of Canada
On May 10, 2010, Executive Director Michael Hefferon and staff lawyer Lisa Loader appeared for the respondent before the Supreme Court of Canada (LeBel, Deschamps and Cromwell JJ.) on an oral hearing of a leave application. The Crown was seeking leave to appeal a decision made October 9, 2009 of a panel of the Court of Appeal for Ontario on a motion, argued by Lisa just before she started with the Clinic, to set aside an order of a single judge of the Court of Appeal dismissing an application for an extension of time to file a Notice of Appeal in a criminal matter. Although the Clinic does not usually do this kind of work, when the Crown advised that it was seeking leave, the Clinic decided to act for the respondent given Lisa's prior involvement and the short timeline. The application was dismissed on July 15, 2010.
