Volunteer Positions

Many people start their volunteer experience at the clinic in clerical or reception positions to gain a better understanding of our work, then move into the more knowledge intense areas of casework and intake. However, this is not a requirement.

All of our volunteers are required to sign confidentiality agreements and are supervised by onsight staff. Volunteers are provided with ongoing training in the form of newsletters and monthly meetings. As well, we encourage volunteers to become involved in the social activities of the clinic.

Reception:

Volunteers who staff our reception desk answer the phone and transfer calls to intake workers or staff. These volunteers also greet the public as they come into the office, book appointments, and prepare information to be sent to our satellite offices. Reception volunteers work with the support of our Office Manager and are trained extensively in our phone and computer system. Prior to staffing the desk alone, reception volunteers sit with an experienced volunteers until they feel ready to work independently. Reception at the Legal Clinic can, at times, be fairly busy and chaotic, but volunteers have an excellent opportunity to interact with people and provide the initial face and voice of the clinic.

Clerical:

Clerical volunteers are trained in one or more tasks at the clinic that can involve a high volume of a repetitive activity. These volunteers, working independently in a quiet office, have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the administrative function of the clinic. Clerical volunteers enjoy working with clinic staff, but do not interact with the public.

Casework:

Casework volunteers assist a team of staff in managing all files related to Social Assistance (Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Benefits). Management includes reviewing files to ensure that all materials are received and that files are progressing according to estabilished criteria. Volunteers file documents, write standard letters, track hearing dates, and flag files needing review by staff. This is an opportunity to become familiar with legal process, file management, and the life experiences of our clients.

Intake:

Intake volunteers provide initial interviews with clients, in person and over the phone. Working under the direct supervision of a caseworker, these volunteers are often able to provide the information, advice and materials required to enable clients to take their own legal action. Alternatively, the volunteers take the information required to allow the clinic to open a file or provide a more detailed opinion to the client on their case. These volunteers have the opportunity to engage more deeply in the work of the clinic, thus improving their legal knowledge and interviewing skills.
